When should you see a gynaecologist for the first time?

While all situations and needs are unique, we recommend that young women first see a their GP between the ages of 13 and 15. This first appointment can include a regular health exam and a chat about what should be expected as part of the female development process.

If necessary a referral can then be made to see Dr Joseph who is an experienced gynaecologist and women’s health practitioner.

Establishing a relationship with a women’s health practitioner, whether a GP or obstetrician and gynaecologist, is a great way to develop a relationship with the to ensure young women feel comfortable sharing personal information in the future. This is particularly important for young women who have been or are planning to be sexually active or experiencing problems with their period.

How do I prepare for a gynaecologist appointment?

Before you schedule your gynaecologist appointment, the first step is understanding why you’re going to in the first place. Be prepared with any questions or have notes to review all of your concerns during the appointment. Dr Joseph will spend whatever time is necessary with you to discuss your concerns and ensure you complete peace of mind.

Preparing yourself beforehand can also be of benefit, and we recommend considering the following:

  • During your appointment, we will note your height, weight, and blood pressure and may perform a pelvic exam or cervical screening test (formerly known as a Pap Test or Papsmear).
  • During a Cervical Screening Test, the lower part of your uterus, or cervix, will be swabbed to collect a sample of cervical cells for testing to check for any abnormalities.
  • A pelvic exam if required or pelvic ultrasound, determines if your uterus and ovaries are healthy, and we will walk you through the procedure to ensure you are completely comfortable.
  • You can ask for recommendations and prescriptions for birth control, and we will ask questions about your lifestyle and medical history, along with any preference you may have regarding various birth control options.

It is important that you do not worry about appearances such as pubic hair, labia length, or any other aspects of your body during your appointment. It is normal to feel self-conscious, and many personal questions will be asked regarding your period and sex life, but Dr Joseph creates a safe, comfortable environment that puts your health as the primary focus. If you wish a chaperone this can be arranged with one of Dr Joseph’s nurses on hand to make you feel comfortable and secure.

What are the common gynaecological surgeries?

Some more common gynaecological procedures include cervical cryosurgery, hysteroscopy, pelvic laparoscopy, and colposcopy. These procedures focus on understanding more about the condition of the uterus, cervix, and vagina, often to take samples for a biopsy or treat certain conditions. Dr Joseph will determine which of these you may require, if any, after a full assessment.

Do you need a referral for a gynaecologist?

Yes, an appointment with a gynaecologist or obstetrician will usually require a referral from your GP. However, you can call our team anytime if this is not possible or for further clarification based on your situation.

Why would I be referred to a gynaecologist?

A gynaecologist referral is often done if there may be concerns about specific symptoms such as abnormal bleeding from the uterus or pelvic, vulvar, and vaginal pain. Gynaecologist referrals are often required for fertility, pregnancy, menstruation, and menopause issues.
