Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a common bacteria carried by 1 in 5 women. While usually harmless to the mother, it can pass to the baby during birth, potentially causing severe infection. Testing at 35-37 weeks is most accurate. Antibiotics during labor can prevent transmission, particularly with risk factors present.
