Group B streptococcus – also known as GBS, or group B strep is a type of bacteria.
The bacteria lives on our bodies and it is quite common. It is part of the normal population of bacteria that is carried around in our intestines or vagina.
GBS is NOT considered a disease that needs to be treated if you are healthy. However, if it is present in the vagina during labour, it may be passed to the baby.
About 20% of women have GBS in their vagina around the time of giving birth.
